A Place to Call Home has a full house, due to the economy and other reasons, so we have had to revise our policy for taking in birds. We can only accept friendly, adoptable birds into our adoption program. Unfortunately, birds with major issues like aggression, or unsocialized birds do not make great pets and usually wind up staying with us. Since we are not a sanctuary, we do not have the room to house these birds and therefore cannot accept them into our program.
Due to the crowding at the shelter, we also cannot take birds in unless there are extenuating circumstances like a debilitating illness or death of the owner, loss of your home or seizure/abandonment cases. A maintenance fee of no less than $100.00 per bird and no more than $200.00 per bird is needed to place them in our facility. This fee helps to defray the cost of vet checks and feed while they are awaiting a new home. A Place to Call Home reseves the right to make the decision on whether you meet our "emergency" criteria.
For other cases, we will still accept your bird into the adoption program, but ask you to become the "foster home", continuing to care for the bird, until we find it a suitable home. If you are interested in surrendering your bird under this circumstance, please follow the procedure below.
1) You must download the surrender form, complete the form and return it to us by mail or fax (815-384-3190). This relinquishes your ownership of the bird to us.
2) You agree, however, to continue to house and care for the bird until it is adopted.
3) You will provide us with pictures and/or video of your bird and a bio of the bird for us to place on our website.
4) You will provide us with copies of any medical records. If there are no records or the bird has not seen a vet within the current year, we must charge a vet fee of $75.00 per bird for testing and the bird must be made available to us for this testing.
5) Once an adoptive family is found, you must bring the bird to our shelter for the required adoption visits. (We may temporarily keep the bird at the shelter while these visits are being made, should this be easier for you.)
Due to soaring gas prices, we no longer pick up birds, cages or other items for donation.
